TIMS TIP:
Recently, we have been getting a few calls from TIMS personnel that their TIMS servers have been experiencing hard drive failures. Many TIMS servers have been in place for years now and are beginning to show signs of aging.
(I.e., drives crashing or severely fragmented, dust accumulating on the fans and internally, etc). It is very important that we catch the aforementioned problems before they result in complete hard drive crashes and/or other system failures. Most servers have more than one hard drive and continue operating even when one fails. But they are designed to operate only temporarily in this state. New drives must be ordered to replace the ones that have failed ASAP! If the last drive operating fails, there is a HIGH probability of losing all TIMS data that has not been backed up off site.
Furthermore, you may experience days or weeks of down time waiting for new
drives or a new server.
Therefore we are sending this email out as an advisory to everyone who is responsible for their TIMS systems.
Please take a moment and inspect the front of your server; look for a red, orange or yellow light (flashing or not). this may be an indication that a drive or other system component may have failed. If you see this light, contact your system administrator or IT department and ask for further assistance in determining what the next step(s) should be to correct the
problem. Also, if you see buildup of dust in and around the fan, call IT or administration and ask if they can clean the fan and inside components for you.
