Love The Bus 2011

Many schools in North Carolina celebrated “Love the Bus” as part of a national campaign by the American School Bus Council to encourage bus driver appreciation and promote bus safety awareness.  More than 25 million students ride the bus in the United States each day, including nearly 800,000 students in North Carolina.

State Superintendent June Atkinson rode the bus to Jamestown Middle School in Guilford Count on February 18 to celebrate LOVE THE BUS

Drivers were treated to refreshments following the Love the Bus ceremony. This was sponsored by Carolina Thomas, represented by Tom Schaaf, pictured with Supertintendent Atkinson.

Guilford County Schools transportation director Jeff Harris thanked school bus drivers for the important work they do.

Lee County Superintendent Jeff Moss brought doughnuts for school bus drivers at each school in Lee County. On February 22 DPI Transportation Services section chief Derek Graham joined Dr. Moss, transportation director Reid Cagle and drivers from J. Glenn Edwards Elementary school. Graham pointed out the benefits of school bus transportation. In addition to safety and reducing overall emissions, school buses provide the only access to public schools for many students.


Camden CountyBus drivers at Grandy Primary and Camden Intermediate School are pictured with their breakfast buffet.

In Cherokee County, the Murphy High School student government association distributed cards and goody bags to drivers. Two Marble Elementary drivers pose with their Love the Bus Cake!

Drivers at Manteo Elementary School in Dare County received cards from bus riders.
Buster the Bus, accompanied by John Barefoot, visited Meadow School (Johnston County) speaking to K-2 students. He emphasized bus safety and the importance of acting your best on the bus. Buster’s message included staying out of the ‘Danger Zone,’ the blind spots on the bus which include the back of the bus and crossing arm area in front of the bus.

In Rowan County, Richard Cleary (DMV SBTSS) and Janice Query visited many schools with Buster the Bus, teaching children about school bus safety. See article in The Salisbury Post:

Buster made and appearance at Manteo Elementary and the school sign let everyone know that bus drivers are loved!
Buster the Bus visited North Duplin Elementary to celebrate Love the Bus. He entertained and talked to students about the importance of school bus safety.

Dare County Sherriff J.D. “Doug” Doughtie visited Nags Head Elementary to talk with students about school bus safety and even spent some time on the bus!

Millers Creek Elementary in Wilkes County celebrated “Love the Bus” week by presenting drivers with gift certificates to Wal-Mart, a cupcake party, and a special concert by the Pre-kindergarten students. They sang, “The Wheels on the Bus”, and presented the drivers with “Love the Bus” posters signed by the students who ride their bus.
In First Flight Elementary School technology coordinator Mary Jo Windley's technology classes, students in grades kindergarten through fifth prepared expressions of appreciation and gratitude to present to their bus drivers during the week of February 14. (Dare County)

Bostian Elementary (Rowan County) carried out several activities throughout the week.  A special bulletin board was put up to highlight the campaign effort. Students were featured on the morning news show performing cheers, raps, songs, and sharing messages of gratitude and video clips. The culminating event included a certificate of appreciation a special breakfast for our drivers.
The UNC-Charlotte Urban Institute got in on the act this year feature a special Love the Bus article on their home page, focusing on fuel savings.

Love the Bus at Candler Elementary (Buncombe County) culminated with a school assembly on Friday with the buses decorated, valentines hand made by the kids, goody bags from the PTA, and aluminum water bottles from our JOY Club.
At Blue Creek Elementary (Onslow County) students made Valentine cards for drivers. Leadership Corps students decorated a bag for each driver to put their Valentine’s in.
